February 2009 Community Service Sew-In

One thing I love about our chapter is our care and concern for our community. Recently 11 members joined together at the St. Joe Township Community Hall to sew fleece sets (hats, mittens, and scarves), Anti-Ouch Pouches, and pillowcases for organizations in our community. We also collected items for the emergency food pantry for the St. Joe Township Trustee. We received generous donations of fleece from Becky Stroup and Georgi Schneider. In addition Carolyn Delagrange, Lenore Hess, and Connie Lundy donated fabric and fiberfill for Anti-Ouch Pouches. Thank you to all who donated their time as well as their resources.

The fleece sets were distributed to the St. Joe Township Trustee, The Salvation Army, SCAN, Crossroads Children's Home, and the Associated Churches. Each of these organizations appreciated the items very much as they reach out to the needy of our community especially during the very cold weather we had been experiencing.

The Anti-Ouch Pouches were taken to Cancer Services of NE Indiana to be used by women who are battling breast cancer. They are always in need of the pouches, but if you don't like sewing them there are other sewn items they need, too.

The pillowcases are part of the ASG National Community Service project for 2009. We, however, don't have a Ronald McDonald House locally, but we do have something comparable at the Mad Anthony Children's Hope House at Lutheran Hospital. They are a non-profit pediatric hospitality house, independent with no corporate owner and no hospital affiliation. They provide food and lodging as well as a place of comfort for families. They have over 100 people pass through their facility each month.

We received "Thank You" notes from many of our recipients that let us know how grateful they are to our Chapter for supplying the much need items. The note from Children's Hope House was especially touching.

It takes special people to give to others they do not know! On behalf of Children's Hope, thank you for your generous pillowcases! Oh my goodness, they are beautiful and in each of our guest rooms. You did a great job!

The community support is SO important and truly makes a difference in helping provide quality and comforting care for families needing HOPE away from home, during a time of tremendous stress, uncertainty and emotional trauma. God Bless you! Our guests thank you!

You can find out more about the Children's Hope house at http://www.childrenshopefw.org/. They would be happy to give you a tour if you have not visited there before.

As you can see from the above note, you do make a difference! Keep on sewing for others!
